One day tour in Divjake-Karavasta National Park
Preferred Period: mid-April – mid-June
Karavasta is the most important bird area of Albania due to the elevated number of birds distributed in a rich diversity of different habitats including vast wetlands, rivers (Shkumbini in the north and Semani in the south), small ponds, estuarine waters, pine forests and scruby vegetation, sand dunes, etc. Karavasta offers temporary or permanent shelter to more than 245 species of birds compared with 330 observed all over Albania. It is well known for the numerous flocks of migrating and wintering birds, spectacular colors of wintering ducks, the stormy flight of migratory waders and the magnificent descent of the Dalmatian Pelican, the iconic bird staying all year around in the park. We will start early morning with a short stop at the forest entrance aiming to explain the ecosystem as a whole body of nature. We will see parts the forest built up over old sand dunes, water channels among stripes of forest while at the same time we would listen and watch thrushes, warblers, finches and tits in their active search for an early breakfast.
The trip will follow with a small lagoon called Godulla e Vogel, just a short walk from the road, through a
path that goes through the forest. It is worth. It is surrounded by forests all but just in the northern part, where it is bordered by the famous Terbufi channel which takes it origin from Myzeqeja plain. The brackish lagoon waters are used as a roosting site by hundreds of ducks as well as feeding herons, waders and grebes.
Our third stop would be Spiaxho, located at the seaside, in the northern part of Park. Here the sea joins the fresh waters of Terbufi channel. Such a habitat is particularly interesting for several species of waders, herons, cormorants, birds of prey and pelicans of course. Spiaxho is for sure the most diverse site of Karavasta in terms of wildlife.
After spending several hours in the quest of different species, we will close our trip through a walk at Sopi i Artirit. This trail goes at the border forest-lagoon, guides to the watching tower of Dalmatian Pelican. It offers a walk in the forest where we could listen the songbirds and observe the water birds that use the northern part of Karavasta Lagoon. From the observation tower, one can easily notice the Dalmatian Pelican colony where it is worth to hear about the conservation efforts undertaken to preserve the Dalmatian Pelican.
